Why Defining Your Life Perspective Is The First Step In Creating Your Business

As you start any business there will be times when you will wonder why you decided to take on this crazy adventure. You will certainly have ups and downs and that’s why a solid life perspective document can help. To get started, figure out  who, what and why you are starting or have this business. This is a creative process and things will certainly change as you proceed, but you must start with a clear vision and well-defined reasons.

Is it a side business that brings in some extra cash or will this business sustain your family and put your kids through college?

Start off by listing your financial goals; determine how much money you want to make with this business. Is it a side business that brings in some extra cash or will this business sustain your family and put your kids through college? To start with, jot down some monthly or yearly figures.

Next, try to answer why this business is important to you and who you will help with the money you make.  Jot down where you want to be in the next five or ten years.  How do you want to spend your time? Do you want to travel or stay at home and garden?  What do you want to create?  What is your ultimate vision for the future?  Also, define  how you think your business, created from your life’s passion, can get you there and how long it will take.

For me, it’s about having freedom.  Freedom to work on the things that I enjoy doing and the freedom to decide when to work on them.  I like to work off and on during the evening so I can sleep in a bit and take my time in the morning.  It’s also about having time to spend with my children and providing for them.  They are both in college now, so freedom to be able to drive to their campus for the day to hang with them is very important to me.

While freedom is important to me, a friend of mine loves speaking and traveling and being on the road as much as possible; therefore, her business is set up around being flexible enough so she can travel extensively.

Once you have completed your life perspective document you will have a clear vision of where you want your business to take you.  Periodically take it out and review it.  It will give you that added motivation when you have been up all night editing that blog article or after the 15th take of the video you are trying to create.
